The Civil Guard is investigating the violent death of Javier Sánchez, former general secretary of the Union of Farmers and Herdsmen of Aragon (UAGA), and his wife Esther Latorre in Tauste, a town in Aragon. Both victims showed signs of violence and had been stabbed with a sharp weapon.
The discovery was made on the night of Saturday, August 7, when Latorre's sister and brother-in-law went to their home after not receiving any news from the couple throughout the day. The Civil Guard took charge of the investigation and removed the bodies during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Javier Sánchez had led the agricultural union UAGA for twelve years and was closely linked to the agricultural struggle in Aragon and the rest of Spain. His wife, Esther Latorre, had also been involved with UAGA for many years. Both were members of United Left.
From UAGA, there has been an expression of dismay and consternation over the news. "It has been very painful," sources from the union stated. "Javier was a very important person in UAGA, it is very difficult to come to terms with what happened."
For IU-Aragon, the party to which both Sanchez and his wife belonged, it has been "a terrible blow." "We are completely stunned. We want to send a fraternal hug to family members, close friends, and all those who had the privilege, the pride, and the honour of sharing a piece of this vital journey of deep commitment to humanity," said its coordinator, Marta Abengochea.
The investigation remains open, and the Civil Guard continues to gather information about what transpired. According to several sources consulted, it does not seem that gender-based violence lies behind this tragic discovery, although this line of inquiry is not ruled out. Several hypotheses are being explored, and there are currently no arrests.
The mayor of the municipality, Miguel Ángel Francés, highlighted the impact of this sad news. "We are all stunned," he lamented.
The house where the incident occurred is located on Ronda Val de Volvi Street in Tauste, a village of just under 7,000 inhabitants in the Zaragoza region of the Five Villages.
